Whip worms live in the intestine of the dog; fastening to the wall in the intestine. Whipworms can cause diarrhea. This diarrhea may cause anemia, and the dog may lose weight.
Symptoms Of Dog Whip worms
The symptoms of whipworms are bloody stools, pain in the lower abdomen, weight loss, nausea, and anemia.
Casuse of Whip worms in Dogs
A dog or cat becomes infected by ingesting food or water contaminated with whipworm eggs. The eggs are swallowed, hatch, and in three months, the larvae mature into adults in the large intestine where they burrow their mouths into the intestinal wall and feed on blood. Adult worms lay eggs that are passed in the feces. The eggs must remain in the soil for about a month to mature and be capable of causing infection.
Treatment For Whip worms in Dogs
Mebendazole is 90% effective in the first dose, and albendazole may also be offered as an anti-parasitic agent. Adding iron to the bloodstream helps solve the iron deficiency and rectal prolapse.
Infection can be avoided by proper disposal of human feces, avoiding fecal contamination of food, not eating dirt, and avoiding crops fertilized with night soil. Simple and effective proper hygiene such as washing hands and food is recommended for control.
Care Needs
1.Remove feces from backyard every few days
2.Clean yard with a safe cleaning agent (which kills worms)
3.Have feces tested every 6 months (more often if previously infected)
